"In February and March of 2011, amidst uprisings and calls for reform across the region, a number of Bahraini students in college lost their government scholarships for taking part in anti-government protests while King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia simultaneously distributed two-month bonus stipends to all students on government scholarships. Kuwait, like its neighbors' Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, also provides its youth with government scholarships, although it did not face a similar situation. This study seeks to understand the extent to which contractual scholarships between Kuwaiti youth and their government serve as a bellweather for government-societal relations... overall, these scholarships do serve as a bellwether for the study of government-societal relations."
